IRATA certified rope access technician in Singapore

When hiring a rope access company in Singapore, IRATA certification is the single most important credential to verify. Here is what it means and why it matters for your building.

What Is IRATA?

IRATA — the Industrial Rope Access Trade Association — is the globally recognised body that sets standards for rope access work. Founded in the UK in 1987 following the development of rope access techniques in the offshore oil and gas industry, IRATA has established a comprehensive system of training, assessment, and certification that is now the international benchmark for safe rope access practice. IRATA certification is recognised and respected by building owners, insurers, and regulatory authorities worldwide, including in Singapore.

The Three Levels of IRATA Certification

IRATA certification is structured in three progressive levels, each requiring demonstrated competency and a minimum number of logged working hours:

  • IRATA Level 1 (Trainee): Entry-level certification. Technicians can perform rope access work under direct supervision of a Level 3. Minimum 1,000 hours of logged rope access work required for progression.
  • IRATA Level 2 (Technician): Intermediate certification. Technicians can work independently and supervise Level 1 workers. Minimum 1,000 additional hours required for progression.
  • IRATA Level 3 (Supervisor): Senior certification. Technicians can plan and supervise rope access operations, conduct risk assessments, and train Level 1 and 2 workers. This is the highest IRATA certification level.
  • All levels require re-assessment every 3 years to maintain certification currency.
  • IRATA also requires companies to maintain a documented safety management system and submit annual statistics on incidents and near-misses.

Why IRATA Certification Matters for Building Owners

Hiring an uncertified rope access company exposes building owners to significant risks. From a safety perspective, uncertified technicians lack the training to manage the complex hazards of working at height, increasing the risk of accidents that can result in serious injury or death. From a liability perspective, if an accident occurs involving uncertified workers on your property, your insurance coverage may be voided and you may face personal liability. From a regulatory perspective, Singapore's Workplace Safety and Health Act requires that all work at height be conducted safely by competent persons — IRATA certification is the recognised standard for demonstrating this competency.

How to Verify IRATA Certification

Building owners can verify IRATA certification through the IRATA International website, which maintains a public database of certified technicians and member companies. When engaging a rope access company, always request to see the IRATA certificates of the specific technicians who will be working on your building, not just a general company certification. Certificates should be current (within the 3-year validity period) and at the appropriate level for the work being performed. Our team is happy to provide copies of all relevant certifications before any project commences.

IRATA's Safety Record: The Numbers

IRATA's safety record is exceptional and demonstrates the effectiveness of its certification system. According to IRATA's published statistics, the fatal accident rate for IRATA-certified rope access work is approximately 0.004 per 100,000 hours worked — significantly lower than the rates for scaffolding, aerial work platforms, and other access methods. This outstanding safety record is the result of the rigorous training, equipment standards, and operational procedures that IRATA certification requires. When you hire an IRATA certified company, you are choosing the safest possible approach to high-rise building maintenance.
